A Short Look at Skateboarding History
Skateboarding probably started around the late 1940’s or early 1950’s when metal roller skate wheel were attached to each end of a wooden plank about 1” x 4” wide 30” long, just long enough to hold a wooden crate usually rectangular in shape on one end, and room to stand on the other end. Some even had a piece of wood attached at the top of the wooden box to provide handles to hold on to. These were considered to be more of a homemade scooter since skateboards weren’t heard of yet, primitive yes, but they worked. And you could even give a little brother or sister a ride inside the box.
Eventually, the boxes were removed from the planks and skateboards began to evolve into layered wooden skateboards similar of those made today. Skateboarding was considered to be a means of having fun. Skateboarding has had its ups and downs in popularity during the years until its popularity was sparked again in the early 1970’s by Frank Nasworthy, the inventor of the urethane skateboard wheels.
It wasn’t until in the mid 1970’s when skateboarding came into its maturity when in Del Mar, CA. a slalom and freestyle contest was held at the Ocean Festival where te Zephyr Team rode their boards like no on had seen in the public eye. Skateboarding was then taken from a hobby to something serious and exciting, skateboarding became a sport.
